The American Near East Refugee Aid (Anera), a US-based humanitarian organization that runs two community kitchens in the Gaza strip, has warned that there are no fresh vegetables or meat left, and several of the few remaining community kitchens are set to close soon. This is a direct result of Israel cutting off all supplies from entering Gaza two months ago, and Sami Matar, who leads the Anera team, has said that “we expect we have two weeks’ supply, maybe less”. There has been mounting international pressure on Israel to lift the blockade, especially since the UN’s world food program has said they used up all their stocks of food aid, highlighting that Gaza is approaching a mass starvation crisis and that intentionally starving a population is a war crime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This article is extremely important in understanding and bringing light to the war in Gaza. This explains that Israel is not only militarily attacking Palestinians and the Gaza strip, but is also attacking them through the blockage of supplies and starvation. If this blockade continues for much longer, thousands of Palestinians will die of starvation, which is considered a war crime and further heightens Israel’s attacks on Palestine. Israel and Hamas had agreed to a ceasefire earlier in the year, but broke it on March 18th, 2025, with a complete blockade on supplies beginning on March 2nd. Since then, Israel has continued its attacks on Palestine, claiming that their sole goal is the liberation of hostages taken by Hamas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If Israel continues to completely restrict supplies and cause thousands of Palestinians to starve, it is likely that someone will need to become involved, either countries that support and stand with Palestine, or international organizations that protect against human rights violations and war crimes. Several countries have already expressed their concern for the people of Palestine, and human rights organizations have been monitoring the situation, but if a mass starvation crisis truly is approaching there will need to be more effort than simply monitoring. It is likely that Israel will continue to use the goal of liberating Israeli hostages from Hamas as an excuse to attack Palestinians in Gaza, but causing thousands of people to starve is not an act of conflict, it is a war crime. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This act directly relates back to what we have been discussing in class, particularly in terms of human rights violations and war crimes. Israel’s current attacks perfectly align with the topic of war crimes, which states “they are only committed during armed conflict, and may be committed against both civilians and enemy combatants”. In this case, Israel is purposefully blocking aid from entering Gaza in order to commit war crimes specifically against civilians. They are not attempting to attack enemy combatants and civilians are being caught in the crossfire, but rather they are directly targeting normal Palestinians. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
