Israel officials previously warned Palestinians to evacuate Gaza City, but thousands have opted to stay instead. Residents reported that Israel bombed the Zeitoun, Sabra, Tuffah, and Shejaia districts of Gaza City, and tanks have moved into the Sheikh Radwan district located northwest of the city center. Although medical officials in the districts report destroyed housing and repeated attacks as unjustified, Israel has claimed the military operations are limited to the outskirts of the city to dismantle militants’ tunnels and to locate weaponry. As Israeli attacks on infrastructure increase, questions over humanitarianism arise. UN and Palestinian officials agree that there is no “safe haven” in Gaza, despite Israel’s insistence that they have created humanitarian zones and that Israel is making steps to increase humanitarian aid. As of Thursday, over 63,000 Palestiniand have died in the Israeli offensive.

Israel’s decision to continue pushing through the region even as humanitarian needs are denied, showcases a strong desire to control the region. Israeli forces have not yet penetrated fully into the city center, but as over 63,000 Palestinians have died, one must be brought to question what Israel’s goals are, especially as they continue to reject talks about a ceasefire. To the foreign ministry, Israel must appear strong in the face of a Muslim-dominated Middle East, but staying in Palestine is not only unpopular in Israel, but continues to give other nations reasons to impose sanctions on Israel.

The United States holds the most influence over Israel, but public approval for Israel’s actions have starkly decreased. As according to a 2025 Gallup Poll, 60% of Americans disapprove of Israel’s actions in Gaza, which could prompt politicans to reconsider supporting efforts granting Israel foreign aid. Therefore, it is likely that in response to a protracted offensive, the United States will begin scaling back its aid to Israel. The United Nations has largely condemned Israel’s actions, but has not made any large moves to limit the attacks apart from sending humanitarian aid and workers to Palestine, which is largely due to America’s veto power which prevents any United Nations resolution from directly assaulting Israel’s stance.

In class, we were given two questions which heavily relate to Israel’s current offensive: Should the United States take a more active role in brokering peace in the Middle East and should the United States scale back on its international commitments? The first question is much easier to answer in this context because the war is already arbitrated by Egypt, Qatar, and the United Nations. As in class, I would continue to argue that the United States should take a more hands off approach to the Middle East, and that the United States should be willing to scale back its involvement and allow other parties to handle arbitration, thereby also scaling back on international commitments, and giving more governance powers to international organizations like the United Nations.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israeli-bombardment-pushes-more-palestinians-out-homes-gaza-city-2025-09-04/ Link to 2025 Gallup Poll: https://news.gallup.com/poll/692948/u.s.-back-israel-military-action-gaza-new-low.aspx As according to Gazan health authorities, at least 53 Palestinians were killed on Thursday, and Israeli forces have advanced to being only a few kilometers from the city center.
