The vote to endorse the “New York Declaration”, a plan to put a long-term end to the over 70-year-old conflict, was approved by a body of 193 member states, including Europe and Arab countries. Before the vote, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu asserted his strong position against the establishment of a Palestinian state. The Israel-Hamas conflict is expected to the priority at the upcoming UN general assembly meeting on September 22, where it is hoped Palestine will be officially reccodnized.

From Israel’s perspective, the establishment of a Palestinian State directly impacts and threatens Israeli national security and strategic interests. Isreal does not want to give up control over Palestinian airspace and the presence of an enemy on their boarder threatens tensions and thus, more violence. While the establishment will allow Palestinians more intuitional power and thus possibility for humanitarian reform, the reaction by Israel is unknown and is likely to be extreme as they feel their national security and sovereignty is at risk.

The UN’s role in this is promoting a long-term solution to this crisis. In the eyes of the global community, without both parties involved, a unilateral solution will prove ineffective as one side will always feel they got the shorter end of the stick. Thus, state recondition of Palestine will ensure they have an institutionalized voice and legitimacy through peace talks. The UN’s approach exemplifies a Liberist approach to conflict resolution through cooperation and soft power negotiations. While on the other hand, Israel’s competitive approach shows their basis of realism when it comes to the establishment of a Palestinian state, prioritizing themselves and the preservation of their own power and national security. Considering the perspective of each party involved is essential to understanding complicated global conflicts such as between Israel and Hamas.

source: UN overwhelmingly backs two-state solution to Israel-Palestinian conflict | AP News During a UN General Assembly vote Friday, member states voted overwhelmingly in favor of a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict, calling for Palestine to be recognized as its own sovereign state.
