Hamas’ monopoly of violence makes it seem that they are the only force capable of aptly maintaining security and peace across the Strip, leading future peace deals to reconsider the potential effects of destabilising the region. Several people were killed during the outbreak of the fights and when Hamas publicly executed several of the accused they were met with cheers from crowds. The quick redeployment of thousands of Hamas fighters sparks questions about Israel’s control over the area and whether or not the Gaza Strip is best left under a Hamas-led government, at least for the time being.

The speedy redeployment of Hamas’ troops indicate that not only has Israel’s attempt to weaken Hamas not reached a solid goal, but it also reveals the extent to which Hamas is still the only remaining organization capable of effectively governing the Gaza Strip. The swift reassertion of powers summits Hamas’ legitimacy, and could potentially lead to more effective peace talks than those of the past. Israel must now contend with the fact that re-integrating the Gaza Strip would be incredibly pricely, and that Hamas and other labeled terrorist organizations are prudent to return in number, no matter how hard the IDF fights. Still though, Israel could just as easily be using the ceasefire to assimilate the territories they have taken, and we could be seeing the beginning of a longer and more protractive war which will see a slow decline in Palestinian territory.

One of the most important stakeholders – the United States – has been eerily condratictory as of late. President Trump made remarks which appeared to praise Hamas’ executions, yet this runs directly against U.S. foreign policy of supporting Israel and brokering peace. Israel’s reaction to Hamas movements is yet to be seen, but it could be inferred that the IDF will note the locations from which Hamas fighters have arisen, and that they will seek to take a more clear-sighted approach when dealing with the invasion of a territory that is evidently lacking in long-term stability.

An important distinction to make between Hamas’ reassertion of power and class discussions is the introduction of offensive realism. Hamas is clearly not set towards simply defending a territory, and recent events corroborate a more offensive approach to their fighting style. Hamas has sought to “reconquer” their previously-held territories through direct force which displaces other groups in the region who could potentially vy for power in the Gaza Strip. When Hamas first began their infiltrations into Israel several years ago, they used tactile and strategic diplomacy in an effort to force favorable terms. They are now, however, finding that offensive realist strategy, when used against a stronger and more pervasive power, is not always a winning strategy.

Article: https://www.france24.com/en/middle-east/20251016-two-years-after-israel-s-onslaught-began-hamas-is-back-on-the-streets-of-gaza Following the withdrawal of Israeli troops during a ceasefire, Hamas has quickly reasserted its authority across the Gaza Strip by battling “criminal gangs” and other armed groups.
