In retaliation, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) hit dozens of Hamas targets, including tunnel shafts and military infrastructure.

Palestinian officials reported that the retaliatory Israeli airstrikes killed at least 45 Palestinians across the territory. Following the escalation, Israel also announced it was halting the transfer of humanitarian aid and keeping the Rafah border crossing closed “until further notice.”

Both Israel and Hamas accused the other side of repeatedly violating the ceasefire agreement. Tensions were also high due to an ongoing dispute over the return of the remains of all deceased hostages held by Hamas. Later, the IDF stated it had begun renewed enforcement of the ceasefire, but the day’s events highlighted the extreme fragility of the truce.

International relations is all about offensive and defensive realism to a classical realist. In this case, you could make the argument that Israel is practicing an offensive realist doctrine. Due to the growing threat of Hamas on Israel’s doorstep, officials of Israel could be enacting measures that defend the Israeli homeland that correspond with an all out offensive to reintegrate past UN lines to Israeli territories, effectively stopping the growth of Hamas and permanently solidifying national security in the region for the Israelis. This has many negative side effects as the conquest of Gaza and the West Bank is illegal. International action has already been taken to give the people of Gaza aid; however, there has been lots of speculation about whether or not this aid has been getting through, harming support for the Israelis.

Source: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israeli-media-reports-military-attack-gaza-2025-10-19/ The Israeli military launched a series of air strikes across the Gaza Strip on Sunday, October 19, 2025, in what was reported to be the most serious challenge to the nine-day-old U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
