The capture of el-Fasher, the provincial capital of North Darfur, by the powerful Arab-led force raises fears that Africa’s third-largest nation may split again following a period of independence. The fragmentation of Sudan undermines its territorial sovereignty in addition to challenging the legitimacy of the Sudanese government.

Darfur poses a strategic point to access the central area of Sudan in addition to being a historic site of ethnically motivated killings and violence, laying the groundwork for genocide. The RSF’s advances have been marked by inhumane killings of innocent civilians, targeting the Masalti people in particular. The RSF were accused of ethnically motivated violence, abuse and rape in Darfur and other regions, sparking accusations of genocide and mass killings. A study done by Yale university found cites resembling the look of mass graves and killings that can be seen all the way from space, suggesting a look into the level of devastation over the country at this time. This highlights the toll of conflict on innocent civilians and exposes the government’s failure to protect the Sudanese people. Humanitarian crises tend to be worse in areas of the world with small undeveloped economies, without the infrastructure to provide adequate security and health resources, international aid is crucial.

This situation is especially dangerous considering the isolation of Sudan from the rest of the world, as well as a lack of overall international media coverage. This can lead to delayed aid from international actors such as the United Nations and other organizations, worsening the humanitarian crisis even further. This could be eerily similar to the outcome of the Rwandan genocide in regards to delayed aid. However, the actions of the RSF have been condemned by world powers such as the United States and the UK, with leaders of both countries calling for peace talks to end the violence.

Source: Sudan’s brutal war takes a turn as RSF seizes Darfur region | AP News Earlier this week, The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) ousted the Sudanese army, seizing control of the entire Darfur region, marking a key shift in the country’s ongoing civil war.
