An Israeli human rights group says that at least 94 Palestinian prisoners and detainees have died in Israeli custody in less than two years. A report by Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) claims that there is a practice of systemic killings and cover-ups. The Israel Prison Service (IPS) told the BBC that “All inmates are held according to legal procedures, and their rights including access to medical care, hygiene, and adequate living conditions are upheld by professionally trained staff.” Israeli authorities have stopped providing information about Palestinians who are in custody to the Red Cross. PHRI said that Israel’s incarceration facilities that are holding Palestinians have “effectively been transformed into sites of torture and abuse.” The highest number of deaths (29) happened at the Sde Teiman military prison in Southern Israel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deaths of Palestinians in Israeli prisons will have lasting effects on the region. According to PHRI, the causes of these deaths include torture, physical assault, medical neglect, and malnutrition They create more mistrust and tension, making peace talks harder. These deaths also increase the likelihood of resistance groups, which can increase radicalization and instability. When reading the article I was shocked by the number of deaths. To me the number seemed very low. I am aware that many civilian casualties that happen in public spaces are not reported, and I wonder if this applies to the deaths that occur in the prisons as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main stakeholders involved are Israel, Palestine, PHRI, and IPS. Political groups such as Hamas might use the issue to justify armed resistance. The Israeli government and prison authorities have been denying any wrongdoing. PHRI has emphasized how serious the deaths are and have stated that they are violations of human rights and international law. The IPS has been defensive and denied any abuse.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
