The first of eight planned aid flights carried around 100 tonnes of supplies, including water, shelter materials, sanitation, and health items from EU stockpiles and partner groups. This effort responds to the fall of North Darfur’s capital, El Fasher, to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has cut off critical supply routes and made the region one of the world’s hardest places to reach with aid.

This article is important because the RSF’s takeover of El Fasher after an 18-month siege shut down needed services, triggered mass displacement, and created violence against civilians. The EU stepping in shows how desperate conditions have become, since traditional aid routes were blocked, and millions faced starvation and disease. By airlifting supplies, the EU aims to save lives and stabilize the region. However, the impact depends on continued access and security, making this aid effort difficult.

The EU and international humanitarian actors will use this air bridge to maintain their commitment to assistance by pushing for expanded corridors and negotiation with local forces for safer access. The Sudanese civilians and families who are struggling with food, water, and shelter will take any relief offered. The RSF might tolerate assistance where it suits its strategy or try to control deliveries, which would complicate distributions.

The EU is using soft power by giving aid to Sudan and assisting in humanitarian needs. They’re taking the multilateral approach as they work with NGOs and regional partners. The EU’s approach relates to liberalism and international institutions as they’re involved with international corporations to help with the humanitarian needs in Sudan.

Article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/12/15/eu-launches-aid-flights-to-sudans-darfur-as-humanitarian-crisis-escalates The European Union has launched an emergency “air bridge” to deliver humanitarian aid into Sudan’s war-torn Darfur region, where mass atrocities, starvation, and displacement have left millions in urgent need.
