The Indonesian military plans to have approximately 1,000 personnel ready by early April, increasing to full readiness by June, pending government approval. President Joko Widodo emphasized that the deployment would be strictly humanitarian, focusing on civilian protection, medical assistance, and infrastructure repair. Indonesia does not have diplomatic relations with Israel and frames the mission as supporting Palestinian rights rather than normalizing ties with Israel. Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto stated that troops would only participate with international authorization and under strict rules of engagement. The plan is connected to Trump’s Board of Peace, which is set to unveil $5 billion in pledges for Gaza reconstruction at its inaugural meeting. Indonesian officials continue domestic consultations on the mission.

This pledge of 8,000 troops by Indonesia represents Indonesia’s continued support of Palestinian rights. Historically Indonesia has been a strong voice for Palestine in the Israel-Hamas war but has avoided direct confrontation and conflict with Israel. They have also been a prominent peacekeeping force across other conflicts such as the one in Lebanon. That said, many Indonesians have raised questions over the president’s motives in collaborating with Trump’s peace deal, some suggesting that Widodo is simply trying to cater in Trump’s favor. Either way, Indonesia’s humanitarian support sets an example for other nations to follow as the joint peacekeeping effort moves forward.

Moving forward, Indonesia will continue to aid Gaza in line with Trump’s peace initiative while framing its support as purely humanitarian with no economic interests. The United States may voice support for Indonesia as they work towards peace, potentially negotiating trade or economic deals as suggested by many Indonesians. Trump will follow through with his multi-staged peace plan, encouraging other nations to contribute as Indonesia has done. Palestine, also in accordance with the peace negotiations, will work towards rebuilding with the help of foreign aid. Israel will continue to heavily oversee the plan and all foreign nations involved, cautious to not escalate the already high tensions.

Indonesia’s commitment of troops to Gaza, and the greater Gaza-Israel peace plan, represent a liberal, multilateral approach to security. By pulling in nations from around the globe, the reconstruction plan effectively deters reigniting threats through the idea of collective security. If one nation were to turn against the peace plan, they would be faced with backlash from each involved nation, rather than solely the opposing one. This conflict also demonstrates the drawbacks to liberal multilateral approaches as there has been significant turbulence and disagreement between states surrounding Trump’s proposed deal, escalating tensions and delaying any real humanitarian aid.

Link to Article: https://apnews.com/article/indonesia-trump-prabowo-gaza-israel-peacekeeping-22185f61dd39e6f0c04f22bb541944da Indonesia is preparing to commit up to 8,000 troops to a potential peacekeeping and humanitarian mission in Gaza, marking its first firm pledge to a stabilization force linked to the U.S. President Donald Trump’s new peace initiative.
