The conflict reignited in early March 2026 after Hezbollah launched missiles and drones at Israel in retaliation for Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran; Israel responded with heavy bombardment of southern Lebanon. Thousands of Lebanese civilians have fled the violence, including families still recovering from the devastating 2024 Israel‑Hezbollah war. Many displaced residents blame Hezbollah for reigniting hostilities and worsening their living conditions during Ramadan, breaking a longtime pattern of public support. In an unprecedented move, Lebanon’s government declared Hezbollah’s military actions illegal, with strong Cabinet backing — a significant shift in official policy — and the Lebanese army briefly detained members transporting weapons. However, those arrested were later released on bail. Despite growing frustration, analysts say Hezbollah’s core supporters still largely back the group’s decision to fight, viewing continued Israeli strikes as violations of the previous cease‑fire.

The political shift seen in Lebanon following Hezbollah’s strikes raises a number of questions. Generally, Hezbollah receives relative support and backing from the Shiite population in Lebanon. Now, this population is questioning Hezbollah’s actions as they are drawing Lebanon into a conflict they did not need to be involved in. Hezbollah’s military force makes little impact in Israel relative to the potential threat and target they have placed on Lebanon. I suspect influences in Iran were a strong driving factor in Hezbollah’s decision to strike Israel as the terrorist organization receives a large portion of their funding from Iran.

There are a number of ways this could play out. Hezbollah, I believe, will justify the strikes as resistance against Israeli occupation, potentially carrying out further attacks. Israel is likely to continue retaliating, sending missiles back into Hezbollah areas within Lebanon. Lebanon’s internal politics could shift several ways. Lebanese officials may try to limit Hezbollah’s power both as a militant group and in government. They see Hezbollah’s attacks as instigating unnecessary conflict and could pursue negotiations with Israel to settle the matter. The UN or similar international organizations may step in to negotiate a ceasefire or provide humanitarian aid.

Lebanon’s response, or lack thereof, to this conflict poses questions to its sovereignty. If the Lebanese government can not gain sufficient control over Hezbollah, a militant group, the legitimacy of their state could be compromised. While they are not exactly fighting, Hezbollah and Lebanese officials have recently been showing their differences more prominently. This could suggest there is an escalated battle for power and influence within Lebanon’s government. That said, either Hezbollah or Lebanon’s parliamentary system needs to establish a more defined, official control and order over Lebanon’s foreign interactions.

Link to Article: https://apnews.com/article/lebanon-israel-hezbollah-shiites-base-criticism-84d6e421181c33aac2dee8c42ecdcb9c The recent flare‑up in fighting between Israel and Hezbollah has triggered rare public criticism of the powerful Shiite militia from within its own Lebanese base.
