The attack hit Al Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur and left the facility no longer able to operate, removing a critical source of medical care for the area. Sudan has been engulfed in a civil war since April 2023, when fighting broke out between the national military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Each side has blamed the other for the strike: the RSF accused the military of carrying it out, while the military denied responsibility and said a nearby police station was the intended target. The attack highlights the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, where violence has killed tens of thousands of people and severely damaged the country’s health care system, prompting international officials to call for an end to attacks on medical facilities and a de-escalation of the conflict.

Once again, Sudan’s civil war has taken the lives of dozens more civilians. At this point, mass civilian strikes and attacks in Sudan seem to be a near weekly occurrence. Following a government coup, fighting between the RSF (Rapid Support Forces) and SAF (Sudanese Armed Forces) oppositions has been ongoing since 2023. As the conflict continues with no realistic end in sight and death tolls rise, the need for humanitarian aid or third party mediation becomes increasingly vital. It goes without saying that this war poses an immense threat to millions of Sudanese citizens, and without foreign involvement, it seems unlikely to come to an end.

The two main parties involved are the RSF and SAF. Both have been unwilling to make any lasting compromise over the past several years. Each side has engaged in terroristic measures, often blaming the other. While the RSF has made large advances recently, neither side is truly winning, and there is no logical end in sight. That said, a third party mediator could get involved. This could come in the form of aid from nations such as the UAE, who has backed the RSF, or Iran, who has backed the SAF. It could also come in the form of UN peacekeeping, though that route would be aimed more towards humanitarian efforts than political mediation.

This conflict demonstrates the limitations of international law. Under the Geneva Conventions, which Sudan ratifies decades prior, medical facilities and civilians are off-limits to armed conflict. This makes actions targeted on civilians, or a hospital in this case, by both the SAF and RSF, war crimes. However, while each side may have committed war crimes, the enforcement of any punishment is very unlikely to come. Neither side will take accountability for these strikes, making it hard to unquestionably determine the guilty party. Additionally, Sudan’s sovereignty is at a low, with the government being split across the two primary opposing groups. These factors make it difficult for the UN to make a ruling or elicit any action within the region.

Link to Article: https://apnews.com/article/sudan-strike-darfur-rsf-army-hospital-127fa3eb59ac1d19f72d1f7a1b2624bd A recent strike on a hospital in Sudan’s Darfur region killed at least 64 people, including at least 13 children, and injured dozens more, according to the World Health Organization.
