In today’s society, it is increasingly important to have clean energy and have good working conditions, which is an obvious thing to want. In America, we have many ways of getting energy and the conditions of work are usually high standard. In other countries such as India, the story is slightly different. India itself is pushing to have more clean forms of energy rather than continuing to use coal, and they hope to reduce dependency on coal by 57% by 2027. India, being the second most populated country in the world, needs to switch to clean energy to help with pollution.

Safety and working conditions in a Unachular plant in Uttar Pradesh were questioned after an accident left 37 dead and 100 injured. This isn’t an isolated incident, as large-scale factory accidents do happen to often in India. In 1984, 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a production plant into the city of Bhopal, killing 5,295 people, but it is estimated that up to 20,000 either died or were affected. The city still feels the effects of the accident. Then again 25 years later in Bhopal, a chimney of a production plant collapsed during construction, killing 45. The boilers in the Unachular plant were supposed to have indicators that told if the pressure was getting too high. The boiler that caused to incident was new, and just had maintenance done on it the morning of the accident.
