19 people sentenced to death in Bangladesh over 2004 grenade attack

It all started in 2004 at an anti-terrorism rally ran by the Awami League in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The attack occurred at the end of Sheikh Hasina’s speech. The attack killed 24 and injured 300 people including Hasina. What makes this attack standout against the rest of Bangladesh’s violent history, is the political magnitude. It was an attack on the democracy that Bangladesh had. It was one of the biggest attacks on a certain political class in Bangladesh. Right after the attack the Awami League called for a nationwide hartal. A Hartal is a call to action. They established this to begin the fight against this suppression. Also what makes this unique and messy is that the attacked was organized by the opposing party that was in power at the time the BNP(Bangladesh Nationalist Party). Having this advantage led to the tampering and altering of evidence with the event and case. One tactic was creating false political drama to take away the attention of the attack. This is what makes the verdict of this case so crucial, it stands for justice and an end to state-sponsored terrorism in Bangladesh. A specific person involved in the case is Tahrique Rahman the son of then opposition to Hasina, Khaleda Zia. This will decide his political fate in later elections. HIs lawyer claiming this was all a huge plot to derail his run for election. He claimed that the timing was dangerously coincidental and that all the accusations made no sense. Finally on October 10th, 2018 Bangladesh court sentence 19 people to death, the people sentenced includes former minister, agency leaders, and an array of islamist extremists. Even though the case is suppose to generally be straight forward it isn’t, it brings politics and even the people’s views into this. Security was tightened at the courts, and more security out on the streets. They are fully expecting violence and disorder on the streets.
