The Indian government has claimed by their measures to have electrified every single village in India. For a village to be considered to have electricity, at least ten percent of the households must have electricity and all of the major buildings such as schools, churches, and hospitals must have electricity. Although all of India’s villages now have electricity they are now struggling with energy supply problems. According to the article just six out of the twenty-nine Indian states have villages that have access to a power supply twenty-four/seven. Some of the states where they are major energy supply problems only have access to electricity for between one and four hours a day. With that said most Indian states fall somewhere in the middle of the two extremes and most have access to electricity for about twelve hours a day. The reason the claim to full electricity in all of the Indian villages was under investigation is because there is an election coming up and the incumbents were saying that they had made some much progress and part of that progress had been getting power to all the citizens of India.

As an American or just as someone who lives in a first world country, I think that as a society we take many things for granted and one of those things being have access to electricity and water. I think that we seem to forget that roughly over a billion people or about sixteen percent of the world’s population is still without access to electricity. In regards to India claiming to have electrified all over their villages, I think this is a step in the right direction; however, I feel like their way of calculating it can lead to a misleading statistic. I feel like this is a step in the right direction because I feel access to electricity is a basic human right and something that everyone should have access to. I feel like there way of calculating leads to a misleading stat because in order for a village to be formally deemed electrified only ten percent of households need to have access to electricity. I feel like in order for a village to be considered to have access to electricity at least the majority of villagers should have access to electricity in their homes. I feel like this stat is misleading and the incumbent party is using it to try to push their again and get themselves re-elected to office.
