On Monday, India welcomed the U.S removed Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terrorism. India has a long history and similar culture to that of Sudan. By being removed off of the terrorism sponsor list, India is now more free so resume normalized relations with Sudan. On top of this, Sudan also announced that they would be normalizing relations with Israel with guidance from the U.S. The India Ministry of External Affairs congratulated Sudan on their return to normalcy and is looking forward to continued relationship building and connection. The MEA, also approved the Juba peace agreement, which was signed by Sudan’s transitional government. They agreed to stop the civil wars that have killed thousands over the last years. The MEA is optimistic that Sudan is taking a step towards a more domestic and peaceful future and is excited to help them along that path.
I think that this is fantastic news. Not only is Sudan benefiting from making peace arrangements, but all countries around Sudan, even in completely different regions. By being off the terrorism sponsor list, by making peace arrangements with Israel, by dealing with internal conflict and wars, Sudan is facing all of their problems head on. I think, that this will in turn cause a domino affect of good things happening in central Asia. Where there are other countries struggling with some of the same problems that Sudan has. I think that specifically, India can take on a roll similar to the U.S, and help guide other neighboring countries in south and central Asia toward a path of peace and recovery. Taking it a step further, I believe that this is once again another step toward the new normal. Obviously, Covid has changed the world and that is irreversible, but I think that countries like India are leading a path toward a new normal. And this new normal, may be even safer, stronger, and better than Covid. It’s just like the stories that you hear about where someone has a very crippling disability, but they still have success. When asked about if they would get rid of their disability, all of the successful people always say no because their disability is often what helped them to become successful. I think that Covid can be viewed similarly, where countries have had the opportunity to slow down, focus on themselves, and fix many long last issues for good.
In class, we talked about how the U.S is the leading world power. I think that this article demonstrates that the U.S literally has a hand in everything and the reach of the U.S is far. Even during the heat of the election, the U.S still has the resources to be solving a never ending problem of conflict with Israel. Even though that they haven’t completed ended all term oil in south/ central Asia and the middle east, they still are taking steps in the right direction. I think that its even hard to fathom, just how far the reach of the U.S is and how much influence we actually have. I wonder, if in my lifetime our reach will always be this far and dominant. Are we going to be knocked off the hill by another, emerging, growing, and great country like India? Is someone going to join us on the Hill? It really is hard to know, but right now, it is clear that the U.S has incredible influence.
