With the rift within the Nepal Communist Party widening, the Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Hou Yanqi, held a meeting with the Prime Minister of Nepal, K P Sharma Oli, for about two hours last week. The two chairmen of the Nepal Communist Party, Pushpa Kamal Dahal and K P Sharma Oli, who are at odds with each other and had even originally declined to meet each other, on Wednesday decided overnight to hold a party secretariat meeting which raised many questions. While foreign diplomats can meet the Prime Minister, it is viewed as inappropriate and wrong when they meet with him in person during an ongoing rift in the Nepal Communist Party.
In my opinion, when Nepal’s Prime Minister meets with Chinese diplomats, it sends out a message that the country’s ruling party isn’t functioning on its own and is being controlled by external forces. Nepal is giving foreign diplomats space to interfere by giving them easy access to Nepal’s highest offices. As Nepal’s powerful neighbours want to increase their influence with the ruling dispensation, other countries may also intensify their engagement with internal politics, and that’s decidedly not good for Nepali sovereignty. Such activities by the diplomats show that there a problems with Nepal’s foreign policy and that it is not balanced.
I believe this occurrence is a perfect example of classical realism taking place. It would make sense that in response to the rift in the Nepal Communist Party, the party is utilizing China, which is a communist powerhouse, to gain back their power (due to greed which is stated in classical realism). This is a very much feasible presumption given the circumstances, however, since there is no definite evidence of interference, the public has yet to find out what was discussed in the meeting.
