In this article, it describes the cause of sanctions that have been placed on Iran following accusations of sending weapons to Russia. The US and UK have formally accused Iran of sending ballistic missiles and drones to support Russia’s counter offensive against Ukraine. Iran has denied all claims made by the US and UK though many NATO countries have joined the US in sanctioning Iran claiming the missile transfer is a threat to security in Europe. Iran has been in a hot seat in the Middle east and the world stage as they have been providing weapons to a multitude of terrorist organizations as well as Russia. These sanctions target companies based in Iran, China, Russia, Turkey, and all other nations who have connections to Iran’s drone program. Some Iranian voices claim this accusation will help fuel the flames of the Israeli/Hamas conflict. This is also due to the US providing a large amount of weapons to both Israel and Ukraine. Iran has been making plays to disadvantage American foreign interests.
This ultimately contributes to heightening tensions between Iran and the US/NATO. Much of the conflict in Ukraine has shown Russian inability to push through Ukraine, yet the feeding of weaponry to the Russian will prolong the conflict instead of limiting the firepower available. Even if the US is wrong in it’s accusations it will not change the outcomes of gaining more political support to Ukraine and allowing policy makers to take a harsher stance against Iran further alienating them from the West.
Iran’s response doesn’t come off as powerful but more as an attempt to appease their allies with weapons while still being able to save face on the world stage as they will still deny these allegations and there is a part of the west that will see this as war mongering by the US and UK.
This directly connects to how we discussed political entities cooperating on a global level and how the world stage operates. Diplomats and spokespeople on both sides give their stance and we interpret based on their credibility and legitimacy. It also lend credence to how we discuss the US as a world super power as we have been able to punish states that support countries that oppose our foreign interests. It also showcases the interconnectivity of the global stage as a Central Asia state sending weapons to a European state caused sanctions on a multitude of countries and is still connected to a smaller conflict in the Middle East.
