Iranian hackers sent emails containing classified information from the Trump campaign to people associated with the Biden Administration to interfere with the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election. The FBI reported that all recipients viewed the emails as spam or phishing attempts and didn’t respond; and also, that the emails were sent before the hack was publicly known. Iran is expected to oppose the reelection of Trump, due to the withdrawal of the Iran Nuclear deal, and the killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani under the Trump Administration. Politico, the New York Times, and The Washington Post all received emails with leaked campaign details but didn’t share more.

The idea of foreign hackers meddling in U.S. elections can destroy voter confidence and trust in the system, leading citizens to question the legitimacy of elections and electors, or even causing them not to vote at all. As cybersecurity continues to grow as a threat, I think this event is a reminder of the danger foreign cyberattacks and vulnerabilities are to our political system and integrity. On the other hand, Iran sees the Trump Administration as a threat, and if he’s elected to office again, it could lead to rising tensions between the U.S. and Iran.

To respond to the event, most importantly the U.S. should take on more enhanced cybersecurity measures to prevent the potential threat to our political process. Along with that, they could promote more sanctions on Iran. The Trump campaign could use this to its advantage to persuade citizens to vote for him to bring up the ideas of those enhanced cybersecurity measures that the U.S. needs to take.

As we learn about diplomacy or the practice of relations with other states, this event was something that could lead to international discussions and agreements based on the risks of cybercrime, and the international respect through cyber. On the other hand, the Iranian hackers were trying to take away Trump’s legitimacy, or his right given by the citizens to lead. If they could find ways to hurt his campaign, it could convince voters that he’s not who they want as president, ultimately letting Iran get the democratic presidential choice that they want.
