In 2024 Bangladeshi riots and protests led to the expulsion of dictator Sheikh Hasina from the nation. Sheikh Hasina fled to India following these protests and has remained there since despite multiple calls from the Bangladeshi interim government for her extradition. Hasina has received support from Delhi throughout her reign, these facts, combined with accusations of violence against the Hindi minority in Bangladesh has made Bangladeshi-Indian relations take a turn for the worst. Words have been exchanged between Government officials, and other acts such as vandalization have also taken place. For example the Bangladeshi embassy got attacked by 21 Hindu Nationalists who vandalized the building, Bangladesh’s interim govt accused India of trying to create an “internal political issue within Bangladesh”.
These events are important because of the economic relationship between the 2 states. Bangladesh’s largest trade partner is India, and any hostile interactions would completely shut any chances of maintaining that economic partnership. These series of events comes as a climax to heightening tensions between the 2 religiously opposed states. India and Bangladesh split in the 1950s due to this religious divide and there has been bad blood ever since. This event comes as an emerging trend between India and Bangladesh. Both the Bangladeshi and Indian governments should come forward with statements apologizing for their actions and calling for peaceful and friendly diplomatic avenues to be established between the states. Infighting between the 2 states will only strain possible economic ties between the states and wont accomplish much. Bangladesh, being a majority Muslim state would refuse any attempts for Indian domination, which locks India out of attempting anything of the sort.
