U.S. President, Donald Trump wrote a letter to Iran’s supreme leader in an attempt to jump-start discussions over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program, which has arrived in the Iranian capital. Although the letter hasn’t been published, its arrival comes as Trump levied new sanctions on Iran. These sanctions are just a part of his “maximum pressure” campaign, targeting the country of Iran. He has also suggested military action against Iran has remained a possibility, while he emphasizes he still believes a new deal could be reached. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s 85-year-old Supreme Leader has mocked Trump, but officials within Iran have also offered conflicting signals regarding the possibility of negotiations taking place.
Iran’s nuclear program is not one to be overlooked. With only a handful of countries within the world with nuclear arsenals, any considering developing or growing nuclear abilities has to be dealt with directly. The relationship between the U.S. and Iran has been a rocky road since the 1970s. From the treatment of the shahs cancer in mainland America, and the overrunning of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. Iran and U.S relations have rapidly deteriorated following Shah Mohammad Pahlavi. The severe language and rhetoric traded between Trump and Khamenei are typical as politicians must appear strong in the face of adversity to appeal to a voter base. However, Khamenei and Trump may seek backdoor deals concerning Tariffs, the Iran Nuclear Program, and military action.
I feel that it is likely for growing tensions to emerge between the US and Iran if some sort of deal or negotiation is not possible.
