Following the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Indian-controlled Kashmir, which killed 26 people who were mostly Indian Hindu tourists, tensions have sharply escalated between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan. India blames the attack on Pakistan militants, an accusation that Islamabad firmly denies. This marks the first high-profile diplomatic visit to the region since the incident.

Araghchi met separtley with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Sharif, who expressed gratitude for Iran’s efforts. Araghchi is also scheduled to visit India in the coming weeks, signaling Tehran’s commitment to defusing the conflict. In parallel, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio guterres urged both of the countries to exercise “maximum restraint” and warned against military solutions, offereing the UN’s support for peacful resolution initiatives.

Despite Islamabad’s offer to cooperate in an international investigation around the conflict, India has not responded affirmatively. Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized that while Pakistan would refrain from escalating, any Indian aggression would be met with a “befitting response”. he cited some intelligence suggesting that India might consider a military strike, putting the Pakistani military on high alert. In this show of transparency, Pakistani officials took journalist to the village of Bella Noor Shah in Pakistan, where India had claimed a militant training camp existed. Locals denied any such presence in the region. Meanwhile, many tensions have spilled into the diplomatic and military arenas which leads an unclear future of resolving this conflict.
