North Korea’s military claimed that South Korean drones crossed into its airspace, capturing images of locations inside the North before being intercepted. Pyongyang said it destroyed at least one of the drones and threatened consequences for the alleged incursions.

South Korea strongly denied that its military sent any drones and said it had no drones of the type North Korea described. Instead, South Korean authorities launched an investigation, including summoning a civilian on suspicion of possibly flying the drones, and stressed that they did not intend to provoke the North.

This matters alot due to sovereignty and national security. When North Korea claims that drones violated its airspace, it frames the incident as a threat to its sovereignty. Accusations like this can easily create tension, especially between two countries that interpret almost anything as a provocation.

South Koreas current government has been trying to start talks and improve relations with the north, but incidents like this make that much harder, especially with North Korea being resistant to diplomatic talks. This reflects a security dilemma, which makes conflict prevention and negotiation more difficult.
