On May 9, 2026 a suicide bomber drove a car filled with explosives into a police checkpoint in Bannu, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This killed 15 officers and injured several others. The attacker then entered a building near by to open fire on surviving officers. A group linked to the Pakistani taliban called the Ittehad-ul-Mujahideen has taken responsibility for the attack. Bannu has had a documented history of attacks carried out by the Pakistani Taliban and their affiliate groups. Most of these attacks have been targeted at specific groups that the group determines to be out of line in accordance with Islamic law. In Feb. 2026 dozens were killed in a separate mosque bombing in Islamabad by the Pakistani Taliban, this shows that this attack is a part of a web of attacks throughout Pakistan. Lastly, Islamabad officially blamed Kabul for harboring groups like these, this combined with the current border tension, tensions seem to be trending upwards.

After the overthrow by the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2021 problems concerning terrorism in Pakistan have continued to get worse. I think this is due to the fact that Afghanistan was overthrown by Taliban forces. This principle can be seen all over the region as affecting states. Even larger more powerful states like Iran have been influenced by the allowance of Islamist extremists. I personally believe that it is one of the largest reasons that Iran has had such a hard time coming to the negotiating table with the Americans. The blow back from their proxies would be huge – it would be seen as almost betrayal by their proxies and would likely lead to terror attacks happening on Iranian interests.

Pakistan: I think that Pakistan will most likely begin to invest more into counter terrorism technologies and doctrines. However I could also see the Pakistanis start to conduct operations near and even over the Afghan border to deter weapons and men coming into their homeland. This would become more of a possibility if these terrorist attacks keep happening with men coming from Afghanistan. Taliban fighters: The fighters could go two major directions in my mind, we could keep seeing the consolidation of power into a more central Taliban fighting group. Or we could see the group fragment like we have seen in the past in which the groups would start to inter fight and fight against the Paks.

I can see concepts of hard power and peace and justice. Power: The fighters have directly engaged in combat with the Paks and have established themselves as men willing to die for their position. Peace and justice: The fighters, obviously, have disturbed the way of life for many Pakistanis and have caused much trouble due to the dozens of men and women that they have killed. I also noticed that they are specifically targeting places with government infrastructure rather that just important sites for Pakistan, this could mean they are trying to bring down the Pak government (Justice).
