Five years after the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan, the country continues to face serious humanitarian and political challenges. Reuters reports that the Taliban celebrated the anniversary with a military parade in Kabul, presenting their return as a victory over Western influence. Taliban Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani described their success as the result of courage and religious support, while also acknowledging that problems still remain. However, the situation for many Afghans is very different from the Talibans celebration. International organizations report that humanitarian needs have increased, while foreign aid has declined. Women adn girls have been especially affected, as the Taliban have imposed sever restrictions on education, employment, healthcare, and freedom of movement. Afghanistan is also dealing with natural disasters, economic difficulties, and increased security concerns. The country remains largely isolated internationally, with Russia being the only country to formally recognize the Taliban government.

I think this article is important because it shows how a country can have a government that has control over its territory but still struggle to gain international legitimacy. The taliban has maintained control of afghanistan for five years, despite pressure from other countries and international organizations. At the same time, afghanistan continues to depend on outside humanitarian assistance while foreign aid is decreasing, The Taliban’s restrictions on women and girls have also made it harder for the country to improve economically and socially. The situation shows that removing a foreign military presence does not automatically solve a country’s political or humanitarian problems. Afghanistan is still dealing with the long-term effects of war, poverty, and political isolation.

There are several important stakeholders involved in this situation. The Taliban could respond by changing some of its restrictions, especially those affecting women and girls, which could improve its relationship with other countries and international organizations. Other countries, such as Pakistan, China, and Iran, have an interest in maintaining stability in Afghanistan because they are geographically close and could be affected by conflict, refugees, or terrorism. International organizations and aid groups can continue providing humanitarian assistance to Afghan civilians while putting pressure on the Taliban to improve human rights. Western countries also have to decide whether they should continue isolating the Taliban or communicate with the government to help address Afghanistan’s problems.

This connects to several concepts we have discussed in class, especially sovereignty, legitimacy, recognition, adn international organizations. This shows the difference between having power within a state and being considered a legitimate government by other states. The situation also demonstrates the role of IGO’s, such as the United Nations, in providing humanitarian assistance and responding to international crisis. Afghanistan also shows how neighboring states can influence international relations because Pakistan, China, and Iran all have interests in what happens inside Afghanistan.
