What the class decided on I was relatively happy with because Budan took responsibility, we received business men (Rubits) which would hopefully boost our economy and we didn’t have to pay for any of it. On the other side, I felt that an influx of middle class, successful people would be beneficial because with Budans humanitarian laws they were no longer “refugees” they choose to leave; therefore, they could bring their skills and lives with them, but we implemented a cap on how many we could take. I also would have been happier if other actors contributed more money to the cause, but I realize it may not have been in their best interest.

I enjoyed negotiating with the other actors and trying to come to a solution. It felt like a small victory if you could walk away with any agreement, but we all became quite emotionally invested into the simulation.

There were communication issues regarding other actors, as well as in our own state. It was difficult to work with people in your own group when you all have different view on what you want and how to accomplish that.

Although we didn’t come to a complete agreement in the allotted time, it may be beneficial to shorten the time so that new conflicts don’t arise. Also have specific roles within the groups to potentially curb conflict or just so everyone knows exactly what to do and get done within their roles because if we are all negotiating we may all come up with different terms.

I learned about the difficulty of coming up with a solution, because if you can’t agree on what needs to happen in just one group, it is much more difficult to come to an agreement with all the actors. It also taught me a lot about the collective goods issue, because I found myself much more invested in what is most beneficial for Gilbia alone. Even though a refugee crisis is about humanitarian issues, when fighting for the well-being of your country you see the people as numbers and not families.

I represented Gilbia and within that I played the role of a diplomat.
