With a massive population this isn’t hard to believe. However as the years go on with no change this pollution will just get worse. Pollution is even believed to be responsible for over 1 million deaths in India per year. It’s reported that residents of India’s capital, New Delhi, could live up to nine times longer if the city met WHO (World Health Organization) standards, that is a huge difference to a life span. Reading more into the article by Strait Times you can see how the capital of New Delhi isn’t even doing anything to prevent what’s happening. They’re giving 10,000 homeless people cotton masks to help against smog, not only is this a small portion of the cities homeless population- the population of homeless people is likely 50,000- but these cotton masks have proven to render useless against air particles known as PM2.5, particles so small they can penetrate the heart and cardiovascular system. The masks aren’t medically approved either so it’s as if they’re doing the least they can. Levels of PM2.5, the earlier mentioned air particle, is found significantly in New Delhi, readings hit 378 which is 15 times safe limits. Residents of India are suffering, this level of pollution is not safe for living and is absolutely devastating the environment. The fact that a multinational corporation is doing more to help residents of India than the actual Indian government is devastating. Ikea has actually come up with a plan to target one of Indians biggest sources of pollution. The solution of making furniture out of rice straw to combat farmers burning unwanted rice straw is huge. They’ll be selling these products in India first, hopefully so that more people will stop burning it and the smoke from these massive fires can slowly stop affecting pollution levels in India. Personally i just think with a population as big as India’s the government needs to take further actions to propel itself and it’s citizens if they want to be taken seriously as a world player, which eventually, if not already will happen. The pollution problem needs to be controlled, not just for the sake of India’s people but also for the sake of the world.

Pollution in India is an epidemic, the country has nine of the worlds ten most polluted cities.
