It all started with the Rafale deal, in which India bought 36 fighter jets from French company Dassault for a total of $8.7 billion back in 2016. As part of the Rafale deal, Dassault agreed to invest 50% of the contract in India to manufacture some components of the jet with billionaire Anil Ambani’s Reliance Defence. According to the article “Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the main opposition Congress party, had alleged that Mr Modi ‘favoured’ an Indian company that is part of the French deal.” However, the government denies this, and India’s top court recently decided to dismiss any demands for an investigation into the deal. I think the important part in this article is the idea of how India is becoming an increasingly strong, global power. India currently isn’t one of the major powers in the world, which right now include basically the U.S., the EU, and Japan. However, at the rate its increasing in power across the globe, as outlined with the 36 fighter jets, India will quickly become one of those major powers in the near future.

In Iran, a political activist was thrown in prison for his posts on facebook, which supposedly insulted Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This was the second time he has been thrown in prison for this reason. He went on a hunger strike while in prison to protest the conditions of his imprisonment and his lack of access to a lawyer. He was on this hunger strike for 60 days, until he died just recently. This article is a great showing of the limited freedoms held by the people of Iran, just based on the fact that posting things on facebook not liked by the government can get you thrown in prison.

In India, there has been massive uproar in the public against India’s government saying that it is corrupt and are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
