There were at least 43 deaths in the attack. The attack was said to have lasted at least five hours and broke a period of calm in Kabul, which has been the area of multiple assaults and deadly attacks by militants over the years. This attack also came less than a week after US President Donald Trump had issued gradual withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

Personally, I have mixed feelings towards the removal of troops from Afghanistan. I feel that it is important that we remove our troops from Afghanistan to have them return back to their families and be able to be back home and to give Afghanistan some independence to see how they fare against the Taliban on their own. In addition to this, I believe that the US should leave some troops behind to train Afghan soldiers to properly fight the Taliban without getting overrun and keeping casualties low. Also, if the US leaves troops behind to train Afghan soldiers, these US troops should receive increased pay due to them staying behind when other troops get to return home to their families in the US.

At the same time, I feel like the United States should not remove our troops, or at least not remove a majority of them. As seen by this latest attack, the Taliban aren’t aiming at slowing down and leaving Afghanistan. Within a week of a possible troop withdrawal announcement, the Taliban launched a strong attack and killed dozens which should not go unnoticed and the US and Afghanistan should either retaliate or take stronger efforts towards talks of peace to keep these attacks at a low or non-existent once the United States is entirely removed from Afghanistan.

In the beginning of January, Afghan government offices in Kabul, Afghanistan, were stormed by militants after car bomb was set off outside.
