A national survey shows that India’s unemployment rate has rose to the highest level in 45 years. However, due to how the government interfered with these statistics and withheld the information from the public for a while, it is obvious that India wants to deny the fact that their unemployment rate is so incredibly high. Many people are concerned because it has been found that the country has been growing 7.2 percent each year. This means that the more the country grows, then the higher the unemployment rate grows. India’s economy is also expanding by 7 percent (and more) each year, which means there is “uneven growth”. This means new career opportunities and jobs are not keeping up with the booming economy. This isn’t good for any country, however, because India is such a large country this is causing catastrophic consequences. Many people think that the reason for this heightened unemployment rate is because there is a lack of good quality jobs and there is a huge wages problem. India is attempting to fix this issue, although the plans put in place to create more jobs are failing. Reports are still showing that nearly 18 percent of males and 27 percent of females ages 15-29 are without jobs. Those statistics are showing an enormous gap. As a result, thousands of people with PhDs are applying for jobs as waiters. Millions of people are applying for jobs that only thousands are going to aquire. As a reason for this terrible unemployment rate, it can be traced back to demonetisation and rising working costs after the launch of the national tax put in place by the government. This is most likely why the government was so hesitant to release the statistics of unemployment because they knew it was because of the massive tax.

This week in South and Central Asia the article that drew my attention was about the unemployment rate in India.
