The idea of Chhaupadi was to isolate a woman or girl when she was on her menstrual cycle. It’s a small windowless hut that is secluded from the village. While first world countries would say this is an inhumane practice, many cultures in asian Countries use to practice this. The believed that woman on their menstrual cycle is cursed or brings bad luck to there village. A teenager died this week when she lit a fire in the windowless room with a closed door. There have been many deaths of suffocation because Chhaupadi can get freezing cold. one woman was even killed by a snake bite, due to the seclusion and lack of security. Nepal has since banned this sexist an inhumane practice by banning it in the home in 2005 and making a criminal act in 2017. The punishment for this practice is 3 months in prison and a $30 fine (USD). Even though it’s illegal in Nepal the more rural areas still practice it with little to no punishment. This is due to the lack of law as well as the rural areas tend to be less developed and closer to there original and outdated cultural practices. I personally think that’s it’s great that Nepal is stepping up and this a great move for women’s equality. This region of the world is beginning to grow with the development of India becoming a world power. With a first world status in the region that means women and Ethnic minorities will be given rights they deserve. I do however think the punishment for the creation of a Chhaupadi is not severe enough. $30 dollars is definitely more valuable there then America, but I don’t thinks it’s still enough. 3 months of prison is nothing. Most of the people that are creating the Menstruation huts will probably not get caught. The Nepali government should crack down on these to show they are actually gonna fight equality. This also tricky because it’s a part of culture for the people and It’s hard and can be unfair to change faith, but we definitely live in a time where some traditions are just outdated and people should not be discriminated for things they can’t control. I personally think the biggest issue Countries are facing now is the battle between Tradition, and Equality. Like in America Confederate statues might be scene as offensive to African Americans because of what they fought for, but we also need to recognize history. The conflict between tradition and Equality does not have a clear and easy answer. When people are getting killed by an already discriminatory act, change needs to come.
<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
A Chhaupadi or a Menstruation hut once was a part of Nepali culture.
