Responsibility has been claimed by the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) jihadist group, based out of Pakistan. This tragedy is the worst India’s seen since Kashmir’s insurgency three decades ago.

India’s Lt Gen KJS Dhillon accused Pakistan of being partly responsible for the bombing, claiming that their spy agencies had a hand in the event. Pakistan has responded, saying that any Indian aggression which disturbs the peace of Pakistan will be met with retaliation.

The suicide bombing was located just off of Pulwama, where terrorist Adil Ahmed Dar crashed a Jeep into a convoy of Jammu and Kashmir Security forces. Sources say that Dar had a long string of JK security force protesting. He joined JeM three years ago, shortly after being beaten up by the JK security forces. “‘I never imagined my son would become a suicide bomber,’ said father Ghulam Hassan Dar on NDTV.” (Independent).

Pakistan has had a history of harboring militant groups such as JeM. The government has aided in logistics and weaponry supply for extremist groups to carry out attacks in neighboring Kashmir. However, Pakistan claims to no longer support such groups.

This attack was the worst in India’s recent history and has occurred just weeks before India’s Spring general election. This has prompted Prime Minister Modi to make a decision, which will heavily determine his success and the success of his political party.

“I want to tell the terrorist organisations and their supporters that have made a huge mistake,” Modi announced last Friday. “They will have to pay a very heavy cost for this.
