Its purpose was to prevent women being near the tomb of a revered saint. This tomb is located in Haji Ali Dargah, Mumbai’s most famous mosque. Every week tens of thousands of Muslims, Hindus and tourists travel to this mosque located on the islet off the coast of Mumbai and accessible only during low tide.

Why was the ban even put into action? It was because the trustees of the mosque believed that allowing women to enter was a grievous sin according to the Islam faith.Who is this revered saint? Just a wealthy 15 century Muslim merchant who gave up his wealth and made a pilgrimage to Mecca.

Other mosques and temples were also preventing women from the inner sanctums as well. But women were not taking these bans lightly but began to fight publicly. All over India, campaigns have been launched to enter Hindu temples and religious sites. After a protest march to a temple in Maharashtra state in January, the high court in Mumbai struck down the ban.

But still women were no allowed to enter the Haji Ali Dargah. Only after threatening legal efforts, the trustees relented. Tuesday, November 29 2016, women entered the inner sanctum of the historic mosque.

In the name of Islam, many changes of been made over the years involving women and not in their favor. The mosque and temple bans were not so personal to a woman because worship can occur anywhere. A building is not required. However, to have the freedom to choose to worship inside one’s religious buildings because of sex is wrong. Worshiping is not dependent upon nor a function of one’s sex and hindering it is wrong. It is sad that it took protests and legal actions to overturn the ban but at least it was successful and it appears that the religious sites are beginning to comply.

Back in 2011, a ban was put in place in the country of India.
