Marriage brokers have targeted impoverished and marginalized Christian communities; they offer much-needed money to the families for one of their daughters. There are many accusations that these women are isolated, raped, and wishing for nothing more than to return to their homes. However, investigations have said to be coming to an abrupt halt due to the Pakistani government’s reluctance to sever relations with Beijing. Women who had originally been willing to cooperate in police investigations now refuse to testify; they have either been threatened or bribed into silence. Due to this, cases that were being formed are now crumbling, the leading being a case in Faisalabad who recently acquitted 31 Chinese nationals charged with connections to trafficking. Pakistan’s government has not just put pressure on the victims and witnesses, but also on investigators who have tried to find justice for these hundreds of women. Many believe they are afraid of damaging their relations with China because of the large amount of resources that they receive from them each year. Although the media had once been broadcasting how the allegations of the bride trafficking rings would unfold, they too have now been silenced by the Pakistani government. A woman who had married a Chinese national cried, “No one is doing anything to help these girls,” one official said. “The whole racket is continuing, and it is growing. Why? Because they know they can get away with it. The authorities won’t follow through, everyone is being pressured to not investigate. Trafficking is increasing now.” I believe that it is absurd that the stories of the horrors these women have had to endure have been silenced by their own government. The only way that I can see the possibility of these women receiving the justice that they deserve is if other countries put pressure on the Pakistani government to do what is right for their people, and if the media spreads the tales of the despicable crimes that are being committed.

An investigation launched by The Associated Press has compiled a list of 629 young Pakistani women who were uprooted from their homes to be sold as brides to Chinese men.
