It would be a \u201cdisaster\u201d for the Gulf countries if there\u2019s a conflict between the U.S.<\/a> and Iran,<\/a> Pakistan\u2019s prime minister said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe impact a conflict would have, I repeat, on the oil<\/a> prices. It just … would be a disaster for the whole area,\u201d Pakistan<\/a> Prime Minister Imran Khan told CNBC\u2019s Hadley Gamble<\/a> at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked if he thinks U.S. President Donald Trump<\/a> wants dialogue with Tehran, Khan said that would be \u201csensible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust look at Afghanistan,<\/a> it\u2019s almost now 19 years,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re still finding a solution, still trying to get peace talks going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDoes the U.S. want another conflict?\u201d he asked. \u201cTrust me, Iran will be (a) much, much more difficult conflict than even Afghanistan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions in the region escalated in early January after Iran\u2019s top military general Qasem Soleimani was killed in Baghdad by an American airstrike. Tehran retaliated by firing ballistic missiles at U.S. targets in Iraq,<\/a> but both parties appear to have stepped back from further military actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

War is not the solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA conflict right now with Iran would be a disaster for developing countries,\u201d said Khan. \u201cOil prices will shoot up. Countries like us who are just about balancing our budgets, everything will go up and it\u2019ll just cause poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI did say to President Trump … war is not the solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khan, who visited Iran last October in a bid to mediate between Washington and Tehran, said Iran\u2019s leaders seemed open to holding discussions with the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought they were receptive. I thought they … were willing to talk,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also said war is \u201cnever a solution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
