Tensions have been rising between the two nuclear-armed countries since last April, when India accused Chinese troops of intruding on their side of the border. But, after months of mounting tensions, that threatened the potential of a full fledged war, the rivals agreed to disengage.

India and China have failed to determine their borders since they entered war in 1962. As a result, they have spent over 50 years arguing what land belongs to the other. Last June, the two countries’ militaries participated in hand-to-hand combat. It was the first fatal altercation over their border disputes in over 40 years. India lost 20 soldiers during the clash in Galwan Valley. China recently admitted they lost four soldiers. Although border disputes are often the result of cultural barriers and political borders not aligning, the area along Pangong Tso is a disserted and rural region. One can infer that the disagreement between the two states is rooted in entitlement and national security.

Since last April, thousands of soldiers from both sides have been deployed to the Line of Actual Control (LAC), a facto border that includes the glacier Pangong Tso lake. In early February the Chinese and Indian commanders chose to work through diplomatic means to create an agreed upon plan and withdraw their troops.

The first step towards the full withdrawal was the extraction of military tanks and artillery from the lake area. This agreed action is a significant step taken by both countries towards utilizing diplomacy and cooperation to resolve disputes regarding the LAC.

The two sides have expressed their intention to continue communication, stabilization, and diplomatic means to take control of the situation. In a joint statement the two countries’ foreign ministers expressed a push for mutual respect and understanding in an effort to maintain peace in border areas. A hotline was even set up between the two foreign ministers.

This is a change from their disputes last April, in which India accused Chinese troops of encroaching on their side of the LAC, which resulted in unprecedented numbers of troops being sent to the border. In contrast, China denied India’s accusations and claimed the Indian border guard had behaved in a way to insight conflict. On Sunday troops were withdrawn, the first step towards full downgrade of border tensions.

Both countries have invested resources, lives, and time into their border dispute. Utilizing diplomatic means to resolve boundary disagreement is in the national interests of both countries. Additionally, the hotline between the two foreign ministers demonstrates their commitment to diplomacy. The shocking events in June clearly influenced the states’ decisions this February.

Link: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/2/22/india-china-complete-disengagement-of-troops-from-the-border India and China agreed to pull back their military forces from the disputed border along Pangong Tso, a glacier lake that has become a critical area in their disagreement.
