The facial recognition systems are being installed without laws to regulate the collection and use of data, which is an invasion of children’s privacy, digital rights advocates say.

India plans for a nationwide system to deploy facial recognition technology in airports, railway stations, and cafes all across the country, in hopes to modernise the police force and its information gathering and criminal identification processes. However, analysts report that its benefits are not clear. There are few safeguards and little coherence on how the technology works, how the data is stored, and who can access it.

Delhi government authorities say that facial recognition technologies are ‘extremely important’ to ensure the safety of students and bring transparency and accountability to the system. On the contrary, digital rights activists say that it can cause real harm to the children if the data is leaked, and could cause issues due to the always-on surveillance of the children. While many countries are taking steps to ban the use of facial recognition technology on children, India is doing the opposite, without a second thought about the problems it may create.

This article is important because the Indian government is not assessing the impacts of these new technologies. The whole international community is increasingly turning to technology for everything, which certainly makes things better and more efficient; however, when the government chooses to ignore the potential for harm, it becomes a bad thing. Any technology that is going to affect the public at large needs to be regulated by the government and the government’s use also has to be regulated.

Given the absence of data protection and privacy laws in India, facial recognition technologies are simply concerning, in my opinion. Everyone has a right to privacy, especially children, being a vulnerable demographic. They require greater protection regarding the collection and processing of data.

This article relates to what we’ve been learning in class because the implementation of facial recognition technologies in the country is a way to increase the government’s power and control as a hegemon over its citizens. Officials are blatantly ignoring Indian citizens’ right to privacy by using facial recognition, especially by using it on children who are just sitting in class. Considering the path that India appears to be on with mass surveillance and technological perpetuating of discrimination, a scary dystopian world could appear in the future of the country.

Link to article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/3/2/privacy-fears-as-indias-govt-schools-install-facial-recognition Facial recognition technologies have been installed in at least a dozen government-funded schools in Delhi.
