In the Indian state of Odisha local authorities are trying to get more vaccine to give to the population. Schools and Colleges in Gujarat are once again closed until April 10th. The surge in India is being blamed on people refusing to wear masks, businesses opening up and people crowding onto the trains. The Pakistan government is reporting the British variant has been found in Pakistan as well. In India’s Maharashtra state 23,179 new cases have been reported in the past 24 hours which is bad being the heavy industry in the area. India’s first wave of Covid peaked in September with nearly 100,000 cases per day, but infections dropped to just 9,000 per day last month. The 1.57-billion-person population of India and Pakistan is about one fifth of the total number of humans on the planet. As the cases surge and the countries begin lockdowns again the countries are asking for 2.5 million doses of AstraZeneca’s Covishield. 37 million doses of Covishield have been given in India since mid- January.

People need to understand that mask wearing is cutting down on the spread of Covid-19. They may not wish to wear them for whatever reason, but it appears that wearing them is going to be necessary to control the spread of Covid. The oriental culture seems to have accepted mask wearing as a way of life not only protecting people from the spread of disease, but also from pollution. Sadly, we may not be near the end of the Covid pandemic if we continue to open back up and people do not look out for each other by simply wearing a mask.

These densely populated areas in India and Pakistan need to enforce mask wearing. These areas are not well known for personal hygiene and disease spreads easily. The crowded living areas in this region do not allow for people to spread out. The transportation system does not allow people 6 feet of distance between them. People are literally living on top of each other. I fear that with the British variant being present in this region that the variant will mutate again, and we will then have yet another variant. Also vaccinating one fifth of the population of the planet is a massive undertaking. It will take quite a while to get everyone.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-india-cases/india-and-pakistan-suffer-resurgence-of-covid-19-cases-idUSKBN2BA0BA A huge surge in Covid-19 cases have hit India and Pakistan on Thursday. New curfews are being enforced across nine districts of Punjab in India and the New Delhi city government has pledged to increase the number of vaccines given from 40,000 to 125,000 daily.
