The Pakistani foreign minister recently criticized the India’s military expansion, while his own country held naval drills with 45 countries in the Arabian Sea. A large group of countries, including the U.S., participated in a five day naval exercise that was hosted by the Pakistan Navy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the Pakistani foreign minister is drawing to the aircraft carriers and warships that participated in the second phase of Malabar naval exercises, a joint exercise between the U.S., Japan, India, and Australia in the north east of the Arabian Sea last November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Pakistani state news agency, Islamabad is accusing India of embracing aggressive policies that aim to raise conflict in the Indian Ocean. Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi also expressed concern over India’s purchase of advance naval technologies from its Western powers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the recent Ninth International Maritime Conference in Karachi, Pakistan, the foreign minister continued to accuse India’s policy to be driven by extremist ideology and described it as a threat to regional and international stability and peace. He also claimed that “Pakistan will continue to take all necessary measures to ensure its security and maintain credible minimum deterrence.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two rival countries have fought three full-scale wars, with minor conflicts flaring up in between. In 2016 India changed the naval power balance in the region when it commissioned the INS Arahant, a nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine. This was the first nuclear submarine domestically built by a country that is not a member of the UNSC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although India’s main goal in development of these new weapons is to counter China’s growing military power in the Indo-Pacific region, it has caused tensions in the region to rise. This development poses a threat to Pakistan, who has an increasing role in regional security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, Pakistan recently held the Aman ’21 Naval Exercise, which consisted of naval personnel from over 40 countries. The event consisted of operational drills for countering non-traditional threats and was attended by world and regional powers, including the U.S., Russia, UK, China, and Turkey. This was the first time in almost a decade that Russia forces are taking part in military exercises among multiple NATO members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This event displays that Pakistan is developing and strengthening military cooperation between powerful countries. Through these relationships, Pakistan is becoming a powerful regional police, working to counter threats of maritime piracy and practicing techniques to achieve security and stability at sea. However, it should be considered that India may perceive Pakistan’s efforts as an offensive move, posing a threat to their national security. Therefore, both countries must be mindful and communitive about their actions in order to not raise tensions in the region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
