Last Thursday the most serious violence so far occurred, where 31 were killed in a clash at the Tajikistan border. This led to a ceasefire deal being created that very evening. However, both sides continued to shoot over the next two days before the national security chiefs met again to reinforce the ceasefire. the Kyrgyz ministry has opened investigations into Tajikistan citizens connected to the violence, including murder and illegal border crossings. The area is now being described as “relatively stable,” and a border protocol has been established.

While it appears the countries are taking steps towards creating a peaceful border, it’s doubtful that these efforts will hold up for a long period of time. The ceasefire was immediately broken, and no action was taken towards actually defining these disputed borders. More than a third of the border is disputed, which is a very significant amount. Because these border disputes have been going on since 1990, it’s clearly a very prominent issue in the countries and one that needs a definitive solution. Without the borders being drawn out and agreed upon, the conflict will likely continue and violence will continue to escalate in the region as it already has been.

This relates to what we’re discussing currently in class through international conflict. This is a conflict of interest, and specifically a territorial dispute. As there are no ongoing interstate wars, this conflict is a proxy war, which are more common and typically ongoing. Additionally, as territory is a stable, long term element of power, it’s something neither country wants to give up easily therefore lengthening the conflict. Borders, specifically in this conflict where water is involved, provides access to trade and is therefore associated with wealth as well.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/5/2/kyrgyzstan-says-ceasefire-with-tajikistan-holding-after-clashes Conflict between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan has been ongoing ever since disputes began over land/water on the border between the two countries, specifically after the installation of surveillance cameras near the border.
