U.S. forces are scheduled to be completely removed from the country by September 11, 2001, the 20 year anniversary of 9/11. Previously, under former president Donald Trump, the agreement had stated that U.S. troops would be removed by May 1. President Joe Biden’s extension of the removal date has greatly angered the Taliban, resulting in this outbreak of violence. On April 30, a suicide truck bombing occured in eastern Afghanistan, likely planned by the Taliban. 91 were wounded and at least 21 were killed. The bombing took place at a guest house in Pul-e-Alam, which lodged travellers, students, and those who are less fortunate.

The Taliban has historically demonstrated their dislike of U.S. influence and action in Afghanistan. Joe Biden’s lengthening of the stay of U.S. troops is again seen as the U.S. impeding upon the Taliban, as they were “promised” that the U.S. would exit Afghanistan by May 1. This is almost viewed as the U.S. going back on its word, and makes them appear unreliable moving forward; it leaves more doubt that the U.S. will actually withdraw by September 11. As the date gains proximity, the violence will likely increase regarding the history and traits of the Taliban. Afghan citizens are put in danger with the increase in violence, as shown through this specific incident where over 20 innocent people died. There is additionally potential for Taliban outlash as the U.S. troops attempt to leave the country, prompting possible attack.

This situation can be analyzed through a constructivist perspective. Constructivism places emphasis on the characteristics of individual actors. This comes from their values and beliefs. This clearly portrays the actions of the Taliban, as they often act out using violence when their beliefs/values are violated. This comes into internal and external identity as well. Leaders of the Taliban view themselves as working towards their beliefs, therefore justifying their actions. However, externally the Taliban is projected as violent and occasionally erratic, with motivations that are typically disagreed with and come across as wrong to the rest of the international community.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/4/30/car-bomb-kills-dozens-in-afghanistans-logar-province As the date for the withdrawal of United States troops from Afghanistan looms closer, violence in Afghanistan has taken a sharp increase.
