After persecution in the predominantly Buddhist country, many have fled to Bangladesh as refugees. The camps that the Rohingya people have been living in have recently seen a spike in Covid cases, a total of 863. Because of this, the whole district has been placed under lockdown restrictions.

Though vaccines are available for many citizens of Bangladesh, they are not yet available to Rohingya refugees, despite the fact that 740,000 are living in extremely crowded camps. The new lockdown restrictions should help to keep cases down, but they are only planning to keep it going for a week, which will decrease its effectiveness.

The state of this particular refugee camp in Bangladesh is similar to the experience that the 26 million refugees of the world are having at this very moment. Many are living in crowded camps, and don’t have any access to vaccines. Because the Rohingya aren’t citizens of Bangladesh, they will inevitably put second when it comes to receiving resources and aid.

The current spread of Covid in South Asia is extremely problematic, and requires a united global community to bring down cases. While now might not be the time to try and solve the issue of where the Rohingya people should live and solve the ethnic/religious clash in Myanmar, it is certain that the Rohingya deserve vaccines and medical attention. Developed states like the United States need to evaluate where vaccines and medical supplies are most needed in order to preserve as many lives as possible. This would illustrate the theory of liberalism, as it would show states making decisions that better the global community while putting aside their national interest to a certain extent. Furthermore, the cooperation currently seen in IGOs like the UN demonstrates the theory of Liberal Institutionalism.

Article Link: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/5/21/bangladesh-puts-rohingya-camps-under-lockdown-after-covid-spike The Rohingya are an ethnic group (primarily Muslim) who initially lived in Myanmar.
