Summary: Recently media reports have suggested that the US has been in touch with India to explore the possibility of conducting “over-the-horizon” counter-terror strikes in Afghanistan following America’s departure from Afghanistan. India’s External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi denies such suggestions but adds that the US Congressional hearing on the matter of Afghanistan is “slightly different” from what the media has been reporting. Arindam Baghi also says that the military pacts such as COMCASA, LEMOA, and BECA are there to increase interoperability and to overall increase defense cooperation. Bagchi however does admit later in the briefing that India is engaged and will continue to be engaged with the US and other partners over the developments in Afghanistan. US Congressman Mark Green is claimed to have been wanting to explore the chances of using over-the-horizon capabilities in northwest India for counter-terrorism in Afghanistan during a Congressional hearing. However, the Biden Administration responds by stating they prefer not make comments on the issue. The Secretary of State says that the US will stay engaged with India across the board and that he would rather take up the specific plans regarding counter-terrorism in a different setting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Analysis: With the recent departure from a 20 year campaign by the US, it is interesting that immediately after said exit from a campaign that gained the US nothing that the US is already looking for ways to counter terrorism in that part of the world. It makes you wonder why they left at all if they intend to keep spending resources and time to have bases in India just to keep an eye on a part of the world they abandoned and deemed not worth the time and money they spent. The secretiveness of both the India External Affairs officer and the US Secretary of State make you wonder if the suggestions are closer to true than they are leading us to believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How this Relates to Class: This is a great example of big Global Actors and how they deal with other countries friendly, or not. The US uses allies such as India to keep a presence of sorts in that area and put pressure on Afghanistan without even being there in person. If these talks are true then it will be a case of the US using ally countries to keep other countries that we aren’t as friendly with in check by having troops or some kind of base nearby. This also shows how Big Actors such as the US deal with groups that fall under the Rebel and Terrorist group category, who aren’t states or nations but they still play a large role in the global community such as the Taliban.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
