Thailand has now banned travelers from India, where the coronavirus has infected over 22 million, as well as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Clusters of infection continue to be reported in cities like Bangkok. In eastern Thailand, around 100 cases were reported in African gem traders. New COVID cases, of different variants, are being reported often between Central and South Asian countries, as India is hit the hardest. Without enough vaccines and other protective measures, many countries are beginning to have no other choice but to shut down borders and restrict travel.

Analysis: With less developed countries being severely affected as well as extremely under prepared, Coronavirus is killing hundreds of thousands consistently. This is a crisis that will not simmer down in the near future, as variants continue to form and evolve amongst the infected. With variants becoming more contagious and deadly, other countries do need to step in before it gets worse. Countries like the United States and The United Kingdom should be donating extensive amounts of personal protective equipment and vaccines if they want to prevent further mutation of the virus. This should also be enforced by IGO’s like the UN. This is essential to controlling cases and stopping spread, as the pandemic is a fully international issue. It should be the responsibility of more developed countries to provide aid to the less developed countries that are destructed by the pandemic and its detrimental effects. Thailand’s banning of visitors I believe will also have a drastic effect on local economy.

How does this relate to IR: COVID is a international issue that has crossed borders into every country and affected most of the population in someway. It has had drastic effects on international economics and several industries. The banning of travelers to countries because of COVID has mass effects on economics in countries, which tends to cause a ripple effect into international development, security and more. IGO’s also play a big role in this pandemic, as they hold a lot of power to affect virus handling. The theme of how countries handle crisis is a big part of the Pandemic and can be very important to understanding events in the past and future years to come.

link to article: https://apnews.com/article/pakistan-india-coronavirus-pandemic-health-156aa8c79dff83905cd9c12d33b90cb3 Summary: Amid the ravaging COVID pandemic, Thailand has reported it’s first case of the Indian variant of the Coronavirus in a Thai woman and her son traveling from Pakistan.
