These refugees are in this island after being relocated from camps near the border of Myanmar. This is an effort that Bangladesh has been attempting to solve already with the moving of 19,000 refugees to the Bhasan Char island. The UN say that serving the people of that island was a key reason for signing the agreement. Bangladesh plans to move 100,000 refugees in phases from the crowded camps in Cox’s Bazar district. The Bangladesh government was under criticism from the UN and humanitarian groups for moving these refugees to what they considered an unsafe island because of the tendency for this island to flood by monsoon rains. Bangladesh however counters saying that they have spent millions devolving things such as sea walls and hospitals to ensure safe living. The UN says they are willing to help the Bangladesh government with the relocation of refugees. While Bangladesh and the UN have good intentions in mind some citizens don’t wish to be relocated saying that life on the island isn’t good for them saying that they wish to stay at their home. The UN and Bangladesh Government are still trying to find ways to help these people and ensure that they are happy with their help.

Analysis: With all the refugees coming from various countries and situations its great that the UN is helping. Bangladesh taking in and helping refugees is helping millions. This is the type of thing that the UN should be working towards and assisting in. The reaction from the people getting helped is interesting. The reports of the refugee camps were that they were packed and not good living conditions. On the other the islands and land being provided by Bangladesh have infrastructure and provide much safer and better living conditions. However some are still preferring to stay in their homeland even with the dangers involved in it.

How this relates to class: It shows how countries and MNCs interact and use agreements for the betterment of the people. Bangladesh and the UN are helping lots of people by relocating them to the better suited islands that that the UN and Bangladesh are improving. It also shows how refugees affect other countries in some countries they can’t take the massive influx of people Bangladesh however can take in those refugees so they creating ways to take them in, indirectly helping other countries that can’t take those refugees.

Link to article https://www.independent.co.uk/news/rohingya-bangladesh-myanmar-dhaka-sheikh-hasina-b1935892.html Summary: The United Nations and Bangladesh’s government have signed an agreement to help Rohingya refugees on an island in the Bay of Bengal together.
