Over the Years, Israel has become increasingly alarmed by Iran’s growing influence and military presence in Syria. As a result Israel has increased aerial aggressions by means of missiles and air raids. The most recent attack on Damascus however only resulted in material damages and no casualties.

If one looks at the history of relations between Israel and Syria they can easily see why the two states are fighting today. Ever since the establishment of Israel in 1948, the two nations have been in war pretty much ever since. Surprisingly both states have at times held agreements momentarily stating they would stop fighting however these agreements did not last long especially since Syria has yet to recognize Israel as a state. Therefore Israel sees Syria as a hostile state and prevents its citizens to travel there. Also peace between the two countries has ceased to exist post the syrian civil war which has been ongoing since 2011. In my opinion the historical events that have taken place between the two countries explain that Israel attacked Syria most recently due to their history of generally being enemies and Syria not recognizing Israel, leaving Israel feeling the need to flex their muscles and retaliate.

This article relates to ideas being discussed in class because both Syria and Israel take certain actions they feel are rational to secure their own individual states, however these actions taken ultimately threatens the security of other surrounding states as well as syria and Israel. Both Syria and Israel exemplifying their abilities to defend themselves shows strength as well as gives reasons for other countries to feel the need to increase their militaristic powers and weapon power.

Link To Article: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/11/3/israel-launches-missile-attack-near-syrias-damascus This article details Israel and its recent attacks towards Damascus, a Southwestern region in Syria.
