He was detained in Myanmar and has been charged with terrorism and sedition, and could face life in prison if convicted, according to his lawyer. It remains unclear what exactly he is accused of doing, despite testimony by several prosecution witnesses, however he will likely get convicted anyway, as the trial is closed to the press and public and it will almost certainly not be fair. This comes as Myanmar has been continually cracking down on &#8220;dissent&#8221; and more than 1200 dissenters have been killed after the coup earlier this year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I find it incredibly sad that a journalist from the United States has been arrested and will almost certainly see jail in a sham trial that will convict him of some made up crimes. Myanmar is in turmoil and is trying to silence any criticism so it doesn&#8217;t come as much of a surprise, I am just disappointed. I am curious to see how the United States handles this or if it will turn into a similar situation of Otto Warmbier, who was arrested in North Korea for alleged subversion, and eventually died after he was finally released from North Korean prison at a period of extreme tension between North Korea and the United States. I hope this journalist is freed and allowed to provide his opinion on this topic again but I doubt it will ever happen unless the United States government attempts to strong arm his release, which I don&#8217;t think will happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This relates to class as the United States may use their ability as the unipolar power in the world currently to negotiate the freedom of one of their citizens, and a free journalist.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Link to Article: https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/11\/10\/danny-fenster-myanmar-files-new-charges-against-us-journalist Myanmar has arrested Danny Fenster, an editor for Frontier Myanmar, an online news magazine based in Yangon.
