The meeting between Israel and Morocco was set forth to establish formal relations from last year that were a part of the US Brokered Abraham Accords (brokered from the Trump administration where Morocco, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan signed agreements to normalize relations with Israel. The landmark agreement was said to be crucial as it allows for joint projects and would allow for Israeli military exports to be in Morocco. Despite Morocco severing ties with Israel in the early 2000 after the Palestine uprising, the states have continued to share informal relations mostly due to a sizable number of people in Israel claiming Moroccan heritage. Because of Morocco normalizing relations with Israel, the Trump administration had kept its promise back in December 2020 to recognize Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara (a disputed North African territory).

My thoughts on the article is that the opposing views from the Trump and Biden administration has caused a mix up regarding the Abraham Accords that will cause an unsure future to Morocco and Israeli relations, as now the Biden administration is slowly repealing certain actions and ideas the Trump administration had set forth. For example Biden tried to back away from recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara was definitely a smart move. Although reconsidering the recognition will make Morocco upset, it also restores decades of US policy regarding Western Sahara’s status.

This article relates two the idea that when two states have power or recognizes other states power then both Morocco and Israel for example will use each other to counterbalance one another. This act maintains stability overall and is a regular occurrence.

Link To Article: https://apnews.com/article/middle-east-africa-israel-morocco-rabat-d8d0b925991fe9f544773a7be555ab3a Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz traveled to Morocco this past week following a landmark agreement signed on Wednesday that lays the foundation for security cooperation, intelligence sharing and future arms sales.
