However, there’s a pretty prominent difference between the two types of Bangalis living there. The first is Bangalis who lived in West Pakistan at the time of the creation of Bangladesh. The second is those who migrated afterwards. Because of this difference, there’s an issue with the legality of citizenship for Banglis living in Pakistan. Those who migrated afterward have full citizenship and are free to practice as such. But for those who were there since the beginning, it can be hard to obtain a citizenship that is authentic. This bars many from being able to do things such as leave the country, and even practice the rights of an average citizen. For a young gymnast, she will most likely never be able to compete outside the country because her lack of citizenship means she can’t obtain a passport.

The act of obtaining a citizenship wouldn’t be so difficult if it weren’t for the discrimination that Bangalis face in Pakistan. Because of there ethnicity, may Pakistani people believe that they should not have the rights of a citizen and even should not be allowed in the country. Many who hold these beliefs hold positions of power, meaning they can obstruct the obtaining of a citizenship by abusing their power and holding those applying at a certain checkpoint in the citizenship process. I think that the generalization of a group of people is a lesson we should have learned a long time ago- driving people out of your country because you don’t like their race, ethnicity, or religion should never be legal. The problem is when someone in power is doing the oppressing- which is unfortunately so common.

I think this is a big example of how state lines and borders can sometimes be so dividing in a more literal sense than just division of territory. Although borders are necessary for the governmental aspect of things, I feel that a lot of the time they create such unnecessary divides between different groups of people and really convoluted the end goal of unity and peace. In terms of ethnicity, I believe that discrimination on the basis of ethnicity is what leads to ethnic cleansing down the road, and is something that has to be weeded out as soon as possible.

https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2022/mar/11/women-behind-the-lens-khaula-jamil-bangladeshi-pakistan-gymnastics Because Bangladesh and Pakistan have a long history relating back to the founding of the country Bangladesh, it’s only natural that there’s a high population of Bangalis in Pakistan.
