Over the next six months, the operation is searching for lithium and cobalt mines in Australia as the minerals are key to producing batteries and electric vehicles.
This joint venture by KABIL, an Indian government-sponsored mining coalition between NALU and HCPR, and CMFO, an Australian mining company is looking not only for the minerals within Australia but also for investors to help fund the operation.
This move comes as India is trying to become more self-sufficient in electric car production as the state government is offering billions of dollars in investments to companies who begin producing the batteries.

This search for cobalt and lithium is an effort by the Indian government to move to a “greener economy” and stay more self-sufficient in a possibly more disorderly world. As countries, economies, and people continue to feel the negative effects of climate change like droughts, floods, natural disasters, etc. they will try to become more eco-friendly. One of these supposed eco-friendly swaps is moving from gas and diesel-powered cars to electric cars. This increased demand for electric cars will then stimulate economies that can sell and produce these lithium batteried cars. Therefore, the economic power will move away from oil-producing countries like Saudi Arabia and Iraq to countries with large lithium deposits like Australia and Chile.
Also, with conflict arising in Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia countries are trying to become more self-sufficient to avoid the “anarchy of the global system”. Therefore by staying more self-sufficient India and Australia can avoid the ups and downs of the global economy impacted by foreign investments and sanctioning.

India and Australia through this mining investment and all their actions are serving the goals of government. All governments work to stay in power by ensuring the happiness and well-being of their citizens. Usually, the best way for a country to ensure well-being is through economic power. By making future investments into natural resources, automotive manufacturing, and technical developments, India and Australia can keep their citizens happy and stay in power.
This also demonstrates the economic ideologies of the two states. Both of these countries are mixed leaning towards capitalistic because they both have private corporations and groups operating in the economy, however, their economies are not completely laissez-faire because the government is investing and funding certain industries.

Link to article: https://www.reuters.com/business/india-invest-exploring-lithium-cobalt-mines-australia-2022-03-29/ India and Australia have both invested in mining exploration operations in Australia.
