The West needs to look to vulnerable Russia-dependent economies, like those of Central Asia, in order to mitigate collateral damage. Energy-rich Kazakhstan, which exports two-thirds of its oil supplies through Russian ports, is falling under the new sanctions imposed by the west. These challenges come at a sensitive time for Kazakhstan, following violent unrest in January 2022 that left 225 people dead. In the republics of Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan, governments are bracing for high unemployment and lower budgets.

I wasnt aware of the implications our sanctions had on these asian countries. In a world where we are economically interdependent, we cant afford to let these republics “fall”. The long term effects will be immense. The sanctions will bring new generations of poverty and catastrophe. Although we need to punish Putin for his war crimes we must take the millions of lives affected by the very same sanctions into account. There might be new committees or organizations created to help in aiding the innocent community affected by these sanctions.

These sanctions can be seen through a realist point of view because its a direct response to the war crimes committed. It can be seen through a liberal point of view by seeing the direct effects teh sanctions have on the neighboring countries. it points to the bigger picture of the economic interdependence in our current global world. For the small knowledge I have on the subject, I believe the sanctions are necessary because we are not able to step in militarily. While the sanctions may be a just response to Putin’s aggression in Europe, they could result in instability in neighboring countries. The international community needs to work lessen damage before it is too late.

https://time.com/6156524/russia-ukraine-central-asia-impact/ As our world becomes more economic dependent, Sanctioning Russian Oligarchs may affect more people than policymakers realize.
